This coffee is one of two lots that we bought this year from producer Israel Degfa (through the importer Kamba Coffee). Degfa owns more than 20 washing stations in Guji, Southern Ethiopia. His coffee has been on the shelves of some of our favourite roasters, including Drop Coffee in Stockholm and Crankhouse Coffee in Devon. We love this bean because of its distinctive flavour profile. We taste heady floral aromas, bergamont, red berries, and sweet sugar cane. It is complex and delicious—a standout Ethiopian lot, from the country where the crop originated and that today grows some of the world’s top coffees.

The Uraga Solemo washing station and mill is located 2,300 metres above sea level. Smallholder farmers bring handpicked cherry from mixed heirloom varieties and the varietal 74110 (an unromantic name coined by agronomists in the 1970’s working to improve Ethiopia’s coffee industry). The cherries are dried on raised beds and rotated frequently to ensure uniform drying. The quality control protocols at the washing station are stringent and that, combined with the unique terroir of the region and the high growing altitude, is what makes this coffee so excellent.
