Region: Buesaco municipality, Nariño

Variety: Cautrra, Colombia & Typica
This lot was grown by 60 smallholder farmers on plots located high above the Juanambú Canyon in Buesaco, a town in south western Colombia. The region has produced Cup of Excellence-winning coffee, and the high altitude, low relative humidity, warm days and cool nights make it perfect for the cultivation and processing of exceptional specialty coffee. The farmers who grew this coffee are part of an association called Alianza Café, a specialty coffee off-shoot of a larger organization that was formed by producers in the region to support the development of coffee in the area and provide access to higher value markets. The exporter, Pergamino, was also instrumental in the supply chain. They are also a coffee roastery, with four cafes in Medellín, Colombia. They’ve set up a structure where all the coffee from the association that receives high quality scores is purchased at a premium in accordance to the quality of the lot and the final price at which it is sold. This type of quality improvement program is an effective model that allows producers to be paid fairly for the value of their coffee.
