Coffee Bar Manager/Barista | Steampunk Coffee Roasters

Location: Steampunk Coffee, North Berwick, East Lothian

Overview

We are looking for the right person to join the Steampunk Coffee team as a full time barista and manager of our coffee bar. We want to provide the opportunity of a role for a coffee focussed person that offers personal development as well as the chance to be a part of a growing, responsible business. Our coffee bar where we serve espresso based and filter brewed drinks and cakes is a showcase for our coffee roasting operation and central to our business.

Steampunk Coffee was founded in 2012 with an ethos of roasting the best quality coffee whilst ensuring that people and planet always are considered as equals to profit. We are dedicated to the responsible growth of our business and to playing an important role in the community in which we operate. We are based in the beautiful East Lothian town of North Berwick which is accessed easily from central Edinburgh. North Berwick, and the towns surrounding, offer an unmatched quality of life with our excellent beaches, shops and schools.

About the role

This position is based in our coffee bar in North Berwick, and answers to the business owner and founder who is involved in the daily operation of the business. You will head up our committed cafe team and be supported by our Head Barista to deliver excellent coffee and service to our customers.

Steampunk’s busy roastery operates from the same building that houses our coffee bar. This gives our cafe team a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and love of specialty coffee, working alongside our experienced roasters to produce expertly crafted drinks for our customers from our single origin coffees. Our coffees change over regularly, offering team members constant practice honing barista skills and brewing knowledge. Regular cuppings, beans to experiment with at home, a range of equipment to borrow or purchase at cost are also benefits for the coffee professional. Our coffee bar is an incredibly busy and bustling work environment and will suit someone who enjoys that and can work calmly under pressure.

The key responsibilities of this position are:

  • Working as a barista at the coffee bar
  • Maintaining/developing our high quality coffee program
  • Managing the cafe team
  • Working with our Head Barista in developing the coffee skills of team
  • Supporting our Head Barista in maintaining inventories and equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and healthy work environment
  • Improving the quality of what we do by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implementing changes; maintaining and improving the appearance of the store and coffee bar
  • Updating your job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; remaining up to date in developments within the specialty coffee sector; maintaining personal networks
  • The role does not require responsibility over the rota

The applicant

This post requires a minimum of 3 years experience working as a barista within the specialty coffee sector. Management experience in the specialty sector is desirable but we will consider applicants looking at this as the next step in their career if they can demonstrate experience of the responsibilities outlined above. The successful applicant is someone interested in developing their career within specialty coffee but also a team player; a hard worker; a creative problem solver and a leader. A positive people focused approach is essential.

Practical details

This post is full time and permanent, hours are 35-40 (over 3.5 or 4 days) on a 10 hour shift pattern.

Pay starts at £13.50/hr

This role will require working on a Sunday but other days are flexible. Our rotas are posted 2-4 weeks in advance and work/life balance is important to us so we aim for regular shift patterns and days off together. Own transport (if you live outside of North Berwick) is essential.
